Humid Tropics

Hi

I have a question whether building a home from compressed earth blocks eliminates the need for air-conditioning in tropical country?

What will be the temperature inside if the house was built with these blocks during summer in central Thailand in an open area?

Thanks

Ram

Ram,

Our house has no air conditioning and it is comfortable for us even in April. My sister-in-law likes it so much comes over and naps in our study. We have wall fans in all our rooms.

The comfort of a house depends on the materials used to build it (we used 15cm thick compressed earth blocks) and the architecture. Our home has the ceiling up against the roof rafters. It has a split gable which allows hot air to leave at the top. The dry wall for the ceiling has reflecive foil on the top side.

The need for air conditioning is at least partly a personal preference and personal comfort level.

There are many interesting alternatives to air conditioning. Do some research and let us know what you find.

Our house is also comfortable in the winter.
